Tigers take third in tourney

On Dec. 10, Mamaroneck played host to the 43rd annual Tiger Tournament, as wrestlers from all over Section I and beyond took the mat at Hommocks Middle School. When the dust had settled, it was Long Island-based Wantagh that took top honors, although Mamaroneck’s grapplers acquitted themselves well, placing third out of 18 schools.

Wantagh’s A-team dominated the competition, earning top finishes in eight weight classes to outpoint second-place Shoreham-Wading River A 349.5-202. With 132.5 points, Mamaroneck A edged the CHSAA program from Monsignor Farrell to finish a healthy third.

The Tigers’ A squad was led by a number of top-three finishes, as Crew Fullerton (132 pounds), Mike McGowan (145), and Trent Wechsler (152) all earned a trip to the podium with solid performances.

Other local teams in attendance included Iona Prep, which finished with 84 points to tie for seventh place, and Rye, which gathered 47 points to place 10th. Mamaroneck’s B team ended up tied for 12th place with 38 points.
