Re: ‘Party-backed Democrats won’t debate Tiekert’

To the Editor,

As a lifelong Democrat, 30-year village resident, and a loyal Mamaroneck Democrat, I write in response to last week’s article by James Pero titled “Party-backed Democrats won’t debate Tiekert.”

In New York state, party nomination of candidates for elective office is made at either a party caucus or at a primary election. There was no village of Mamaroneck caucus for Democratic nominees. Rather, four individuals obtained enough signatures on designating petitions to become candidates on the ballot for the primary election scheduled for Sept. 13.

The village of Mamaroneck Democratic Party Committee has no authority to nominate candidates on behalf of the 4,600 registered Democrats in the village. That group simply interviewed candidates and chose three to support.

On Sept. 13, registered village of Mamaroneck Democrats will see four candidates on the ballot. Each voter can choose one, two or three candidates to nominate. The top three vote-getters will become the Democratic Party nominees on November’s ballot.
