Informing the Democratic primary voters

To the Editor,

First, to be totally transparent, I am being a loyal Democratic voter and supporting the three official Democratic candidates for trustee who were selected by the Democratic Nominating Committee, which specifically did not select Stuart Tiekert. I have met the three candidates— Keith Waitt, Victor Tafur and Leon Potok. They are a very strong team. They have been chosen because, collectively, they have the leadership, skills and experience to do well in November. All three need to be elected in order to maintain the Democratic majority on the board.

I have, moreover, encountered Tiekert frequently during my experience as a village of Mamaroneck volunteer, so my decision to support the official Democratic slate is well-considered. These candidates made it clear to me the other night, at a “Meet the Candidates” neighborhood meeting, that they were not going to run any form of negative campaign this election season. They assured me that they want their abilities to speak for themselves and for voters to make their own comparisons between their team and their contenders in both the primary and general elections.

Let me state the facts:

• The three candidates have been out knocking on hundreds of doors and introducing themselves,
and they have been holding “Meet the Candidate” meetings in houses around the
neighborhood.

• Campaign finance reports continue to be filed by their campaign treasurer in accordance
with the rules.

• The campaign has declined a primary debate with the contender for a number of reasons, but above all, the official Democrat campaign believes that it is more productive for potential voters to have small “Meet the Candidate” discussions during a primary election and to reserve the debating to the two officially sanctioned debates with the Republicans (League of Women Voters and Orienta Point Association) during the general election campaign.

It would be so nice if all the contenders could follow the inspiring lead of the three official Democratic candidates and refrain from any negativity or underhanded activity during this election season that runs up to November.
