Central School celebrated Earth Week, Monday, April 18 to Friday, April 22, with a weeklong project aimed at beautifying the grounds and creating an outside classroom for the school’s 498 students. The goal was to turn an unused space into a useful area, according to second-year Principal Joanne Hindley. New tables with sun umbrellas will allow teachers to use the area for classes. “This courtyard had been little used because of the heat in May and June,” she said.

In addition to planting flowers, parent volunteers, including Danielle Morgan and Katy Romita, oversaw the installation of a new irrigation system for the vegetable garden. The new system was funded by a Whole Foods grant and donations from the Central PTA and the Mamaroneck Schools Foundation. Each year, the Central Elementary School PTA provides $2,000 for planting materials for the annual vegetable garden.
