Unbeaten Tigers nab Section 1 title

There haven’t been too many squads this year who have been able to stave off the Mamaroneck Tigers field hockey team, and on Sunday afternoon, the Tigers’ undefeated romp through Section 1 concluded in inevitable fashion; another dominant shutout win to capture the Class A title.

Taking on No. 2 seeded Clarkstown South at Lakeland High School, the Tigers rode three first-half goals to a 4-0 win over the Vikings, another shutout victory in a year that has been full of them.

Mamaroneck wins the Section 1 title with a 4-0 victory over Clarkstown South.

Lily Brickman got things started early for the Tigers, netting a goal in the first quarter. Her opening score was followed by goals from Kate Orchanian, Audrey Adorno and later—in the second half—by Juliette Patricot as Mamaroneck controlled this one from the outset, dominating time of possession and earning a number of corner chances against an overmatched Vikings team.

That level of dominance is something fans have come to expect from the Tigers this year, as the team (16-0-1) has won 15 of its game via shutout. Head coach Trish Miller said that while she knew the team had the ability to make some noise in Class A this year, the team has truly found another gear as the season has rolled along.

““We worked really hard in the offseason and the goal was always to be a good team that could compete for a section title,” said Miller. “But you can never expect anything like this.”

Juliette Patricot said one thing that has been a constant for the Tigers this year has been their focus, crediting the coaching staff—and the accountability of the players—with maintaining a high level of play from early September on.

“Our coaches are great, they really kept us focused,” said Patricot. “We were really just dialed in on what we had to do to get better each game.”

With Section 1 competition behind them, the Tigers will move on to the New York State subregional round, where they will square off against the Section 2 champ on Wednesday afternoon.

“We’ve got a big week coming, we know there are a lot of great teams out there in Section 2,” said Miller. “We’re going to have to win two games to get out of regionals, against Section 2 and Section 9 and they’re all very good teams so we know Wednesday’s going to be a really tough fight for us.”
