Any time Rye and Mamaroneck square off on the ice, the one thing that’s a near-guarantee is that the results will be explosive.
Such was the case on Friday night, when the Tigers traveled up I-95 to take on the Garnets at Playland and topped their hosts 6-4 in a wild mid-season battle.

The Garnets—fresh off a Wednesday night over state-power Suffern—wasted little time getting things going, drawing an early penalty and scoring the game’s first goal just 40 seconds in on a power play goal by Finn Draddy.
The Tigers roared back with goals from Liam Studdert and Aden Kou, setting the tone for a period that would end with the teams knotted at 3-3.
Mamaroneck head coach Mike Chiapparelli noted that although he didn’t expect this contest to be a high-scoring affair, it didn’t take long for the two teams to recognize exactly what kind of game this would be.
“I thought this would end up being a 1-0, 2-1 game or something like it, but that wasn’t the case,” said Chiapparelli. “They go on the power-play 12 seconds into the game and get a goal, and that’s just the kind of night it was.”
But if the first period saw a back-and-forth struggle, the second period was all Mamaroneck, as Studdert netted two more goals to record a hat trick and Mamaroneck goaltender Mikey Dillon turned away some big Rye chances to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead heading into the final 17 seconds.
“We could have had three more goals in the second, we had looks on open nets,” said Chiapparelli. “Mikey is an outstanding goalie, after that first period, we started to play better defense in front of him.
In addition to Student’s hat-trick, the Tigers also got goals from Kou, Charlie Ramsay, and Derek Tumsuden. Rye’s goals were scored by Ryan and Liam Draddy, Nick Doyle and Will Niejadlik.
With the loss—and a subsequent defeat at the hands of Pelham—the Garnets are now 4-4-1 on the year. Mamaroneck, on the other hand, improved to 7-4-2. Chiapparelli noted that the Tigers are closer to returning to full strength—with one of their top scorers in Svante Toftgaard set to return—setting up a potential deep playoff run.“
“We’re getting healthy at the right time,” he said. “And this game proved that we can compete with anybody.”
