The Lions Clubs of Lower Westchester brought thousands of collected used eyeglasses for a day of recycling on Saturday, Oct. 23. The glasses were collected by eight Lions clubs—Ann Sullivan/White Plains, Larchmont Mamaroneck, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Rye City, Tuckahoe/Eastchester, Yonkers and Yonkers Millennium.
The Lions Clubs, whose signature cause is eye health and help for the blind, collect used glasses in donation boxes in locations around the world. Over the past nine months, these eight clubs have collected thousands of glasses. On Saturday, Oct. 23, club members brought their collected glasses to the Lions Recycle Center in Trenton, New Jersey. There they served in the recycle process, which includes sorting, cleaning and prescription checking. They also fulfilled
orders for cleaned and prescription-checked glasses for distribution worldwide.
The Lower Westchester Lions Clubs are in Lions District 20R2, which includes lower Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island, and are part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization of more than1.4 million members. Beyond eye-health and blindness, the Lion focus on five other core causes: hunger, the environment, diabetes, childhood cancer and the future of our youth. They are also signatories of the United Nations resolutions
on women’s and refugee rights.
