STEM-tastic draws 2,000 building buffs

On Saturday, May 14, the STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck held the STEM-tastic 2016 event at the Hommocks Middle School, featuring a panoply of opportunities for kids to build with everything from wooden blocks to computer coding.

This is the third year of the event and Mamaroneck Union Free School District board member Jill Bock estimated more than 2,000 people in attendance at the day-long event. The STEM—science, technology, engineering and math—focused exhibits provided a social outlet for kids who generally tinker by themselves.

“Building can be a very solitary experience for children. These events bring together kids who might not usually seek out others,” Bock said.

STEM-tastic 2016 kicked off with a keynote speech by Bob Partington, a Brooklyn-based engineer and inventor with an arts background, who gave his 10 rules of invention, which included tips on not getting hurt and measuring once, cutting twice.
