Review honored for moratorium reporting

The Review’s James Pero took home an honorable mention for his reporting on the residential development concerns in the village of Larchmont and town of Mamaroneck that arose last year.

Pero grabbed “In-Depth Reporting” honors at the New York Press Association’s Spring Convention and Better Newspaper Contest Awards, an annual gathering of weekly news publications. The convention, which took place April 8 and 9 in Saratoga Springs, New York, brought together industry professionals from all across the state.

In covering the storyline, Pero authored 10 stories focusing on growing opposition to residential development, which started in Larchmont and quickly bleed into Mamaroneck. Ultimately, such opposition led to lengthy moratoriums on residential building in both communities, and reworking of zoning laws in an effort to better maintain each community’s character while also attempting to preserve its history.

“In-Depth Reporting” is often one of the most competitive categories awarded. In selecting Pero’s work, the judge said, “Good solid reporting throughout. The March story comparing the issue in two cities, along with coverage of draft legislation, helped rescue it from meeting coverage.”
